In October 1868 eight farmers decided to start a church and name it Union Church. They built a building with logs from the adjacent forest that was public land at that time. Not long after they began meeting they needed to expand and the log building was extended.
The eight charter members were:
- J. A. and Exer Deakle
- John and Doran Fields
- Almanda and Jane Fort
- Noel and Saran Turner
Above is a sketch of that log building located just beyond the north end of the current cemetery. You can easily find that location by walking to the edge of the cemetery opposite the sanctuary.
Note that this occurred three years after the end of the Civil War.
